Peru has one of the largest networks of Inca and mountain biking trails in all of South America. Mountain biking offers the chance to visit Cusco and its spectacular surroundings in a different way, following the innumerable trails that connect with the most amazing sites in the region, passing through remote villages out of the reach of motorised vehicles, and having the chance to get to know local Andean communities and learn their amazing life-style.

The following programs have been designed having in mind mountain-bikers of all levels. All programs offer an excellent combination of daily activity, adventure routes and cultural sightseeing. Trips are available from half a day to 6 days/5 nights and cater for all levels of experience.

These programs have been developed for visitors staying in the Cusco area. However, itineraries within all of Peru are available and can be designed tailor-made for private groups. Please contact us for more information.

Program

Cusco Ruins 1/2D – Private Service

The four nearby ruins are considered as one of the main attractions for the traveler visiting Cusco. During this route our guide will explain to us each one of this archaeological sites, connected one from each other by nice and fun single tracks, which we will ride on our Mountain bikes.

Itinerary

After about 15 minutes on the road leading to the Sacred Valley, our bus leaves us in the Tambomachay ruins. This is the starting point of our walking – biking route that allows us to enjoy the fun downhill and short uphill single tracks connecting the ruins of Tambomachay, Pucapucara, Moon temple, Qenko and Sacsayhuaman.

This excursion is specially designed for travellers with a free morning in Cusco, who feel the need to escape from the city for a few hours and enjoy sport in the outdoors.

Itinerary

We start riding only 15 minutes from the center of Cusco, at the sites of Pucapucara and Tambomachay. From here, our route takes us through ravines, eucalyptus forests, small villages and extensive agricultural fields. The pleasant sensation of exercise on the gentle up-hills is compensated for by the exhilaration of the down-hills.

On the way, we visit the Pumamarca Hacienda, an ancient Inca palace, converted into an impressive Spanish colonial Hacienda house, which remains in place today, silently testimony to its history.

Itinerary

On this route, situated less than an hour away from Cusco, we visit the ruins of Chinchero, the impressive terraces of Moray (an ancient Inca agricultural experimentation area) and the Maras Salt Pans.

A combination of defined paths and narrow trails which pass through the agricultural fields, offer the cyclist the chance to feel the freedom of the great outdoors and to enjoy a day of excitement on the down-hills, together with the satisfying sensation of exercising on the flat ground and the gentle up-hills.

Impressive views of the Vilcanota mountain range accompany us throughout the journey.

Lares - Calca 1D – Private Service

From the “Abra de Lares” (Lares mountain pass), at 4470m, a wide Inca trail descends into the depths of the Sacred Valley. Spectacular scenery, fast downhills and lots of adrenalin are some of the things which stand out about this incredible downhill route.

Itinerary

The bus picks us up early in the morning from our hotel in Cusco, to take us on a trip of about 3 hours to the highest point on the way between Cusco and the Lares Valley. Once we arrive at this mountain pass, we get our bicycles ready to begin what will be an exciting day of adrenalin and stress relief.

The desolate ground of the puna, covered only with ichu (a local shrub) and meager pasture, give way to more benign and fertile lands as we descend along the banks of the picturesque Qochoq River. The Inca tombs in the narrow canyon, the friendly people of the Totora community, and the breath taking views from the heights of the canal are unforgettable images, which will stay in our memory forever.

Fabulous downhills, various kilometres along a rarely used Inca Trail, relaxing thermal baths, and an unforgettable night under the stars, are some of the things we will enjoy on this two day trip, which leads us to join an ancient road between two important valleys in the Cusco area.

Day 1 – Cusco - Lares

On our way we certainly find the time to stop for a light lunch and enjoy the beautiful views of the region.

Once in Lares we find the time to relax in the delicious thermal baths. A great warm dinner and a well deserved bottle of wine await us to finish our day.

Day 2 – Lares - Cusco

After a healthy breakfast we have the option to visit the ruins and town of Choquecancha. Once the visit is finished, our bus is ready to take us back to the Lares Mountain Pass.

Once again the Mountain Pass is the departure point of our biking ride, but this time heading to the Sacred Valley. The ancient Inca Trail and a quick flowing narrow stream lead us on our way down. Without even noticing it, we go into a small hidden canyon where we may appreciate a few Chulpas (pre Inca tombs) hanging from the walls.

The path leads us to the native community of Totora, where we may decide between following a narrow single track offering breath taking views of the Sacred Valley, or just continue riding on the wide dirt road to Calca town.

Day 1 - Cusco - Paucartambo - Tres Cruces

Our bus takes us from Cusco, for about 2 hours, to the heights of Pisac. The cycling trip goes along a downhill dirt road with a few up hills, leading us to the Paucartambo town. On the way we observe ancient cave paintings. We rest in Paucartambo, where we enjoy a light energizing lunch. Afterwards, we continue on our bus to Ajanaco mountain pass (3600m / 11810f) Depending on how we feel at this point, we have the chance to ride our bikes again and pedal the last 14km of flat terrain to our camping site at Tres Cruces (3580m / 11745f)

Day 2 - Tres Cruces – Cloud Forest

Today we get up before dawn to see the fabulous spectacle of the sun rise which comes up between the clouds of the forest and reaches our feet. After a restorative hot breakfast we take our bikes and start to pedal on what will be a day of down hill on dirt road. We are surprised by the extreme change in scenery as it gradually changes into the dense vegetation of the jungle. At about noon we arrive at our lodge in the cloud forest, where we enjoy a restorative shower and a great lunch. During the afternoon we can walk around the surrounding area and maybe see some of the many species of animals and plants living in the area.

Day 3 – Cloud Forest - Atalaya

We begin our day very early with a short walk. If we are lucky we may see the cock of the rock, Peru’s national bird. After breakfast we take our bicycles and get back on the dirt road, which through a combination of descents and flat ground takes us to Atalaya. At this point we take a short boat ride to our lodge, where we take a refreshing shower. During the afternoon we can walk along the jungle paths and observe some of its incredible flora and fauna.

Day 4 – Atalaya – Cusco

Extensions

Two extensions are recommended for this trip:

  1. Manu Cultural Zone (2 days): For the traveler who doesn’t have much time available, but wants to have a closer insight to the jungle. We spend one extra night in our jungle lodge before going back to Cusco.
  2. Manu Reserved Zone (4 days): Three extra nights for the traveler who wants to go all the way into the Reserved Zone of Manu. We fly back from Boca Manu to Cusco on the fourth day.

What we recommend you to bring

  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the program
  • Daypack to carry your personal belongings
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Strong footwear (biking shoes, trekking boots or sport shoes)
  • Sandals or jogging shoes for a higher comfort while at camp
  • Warm clothes for the night
  • Rain jacket and/or poncho
  • Light jacket for wind and occasional rain during the biking
  • Light clothing for the jungle (light long sleeved shirts and pants)
  • Sleeping bag
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Camera, films
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain or cold
  • Sun block
  • After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body
  • Sun glasses
  • Insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET – no malaria risk has been reported
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Toilet paper
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, muesli, etc. Please note that we do provide a daily morning snack and our meal service is very complete and well supplied. This recommendation applies for all clients being used to a specific snack, as it may happen that it is not included in our selection
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • Non-disposable water canteen. We provide you with fresh water in order to avoid using plastic bottles
  • Cash in soles and/or US$

 

Optional services to be hired

  • Sleeping bag rent: US$ 4.00 / day. Our sleeping bags are –18ºC-comfort (0ºF) and mummy form and include a sleeping liner. They are cleaned after every use and have a maximum usage of 30 trips
  • Therm-a-rest inflatable sleeping pad rent: US$ 5.00 / day
  • Massage sessions: US$60.00 per 1-hour session (US$50.00 per session if at least 2 sessions are booked). Our massage therapists have the highest recognition in Cusco, attending most 4 and 5-star hotels in the city. Our therapists are experts in any of the following treatments: relaxing massage, stress-relieving massage, spinal column massage, energizing massage, Inca massage, altitude problems, aroma therapy, therapy with honey, therapy with glass, therapy with stones, foot reflexology, shiatzu, reiki and puddle of flowering. We recommend massage sessions before and after your trekking program. Our service includes pick-up from your hotel and transfer back after the session (only if in Cusco) or service at the hotel, according to your preference.
