Our Duty: Social Responsibility and the Sol y Luna Intercultural School

Enigma is proud to offer continued support to the Sol y Luna Intercultural School which is helping to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children in the Sacred Valley.

Sol y Luna Intercultural School

We are proud to announce that we will be pledging our support for the 3rd year running, to help five underprivileged children with disabilities that form part of the Sol y Luna Intercultural School, located in the Sacred Valley near Cusco. As part of our alliance with the Sol y Luna Association, we share the common objective of fostering a holistic approach to integrate the children within the local community and provide a solid educational foundation to facilitate social inclusion and improve their quality of life.

The Sol y Luna Intercultural School is a project that was started in 2015 as a way to educate and care for special-needs children and young adults in the Sacred Valley while providing them with personalized assistance. Those involved in this program work relentlessly towards integrating the children into the local community and providing them the education and socially-inclusive foundation that will lead to a brighter future. A complete education allows the children to develop skillsets and take control of their own development and integration in the workplace, while cultural and sport activities build relationships between the children and reinforce the importance of learning and teamwork.

For visitors to the rural foothills of the Sacred Valley, it may seem as if life comprises of idyllic mountain views, snow-capped peaks and harmony with nature. However, the truth is that the beautiful and peaceful environment is viciously juxtaposed against a very harsh reality for the less fortunate. As in many impoverished Andean communities, life is extremely tough and there are few resources or little support available. This means a child’s future may dwindle as it is sadly neglected.

As human beings, it is our duty to take action in times of need, especially when there is a clear flaw in the values and mechanics of our society which lets situations like this go unnoticed. Each and every child has the right to build a life and pursue their dreams – it’s our responsibility to commit to making a shift that will allow their brighter futures to become reality.

About the Kids

Marina (11 yrs) & Nayda (6 yrs): The unfortunate situation at home has left these two sisters isolated and abandoned, leaving them without supervision or a normal education. Their father is an alcoholic and has left the family in a state of turmoil, with little means to carry on what many consider a very basic lifestyle. Marina has been diagnosed with Sturge Weber’s Syndrome which results in mental and physical underdevelopment. For that reason, Marina’s goal is to be able to walk correctly and improve her communication. Nayda started kindergarten last year and is an independent and engaging child, though she is in need of urgent dental attention.

Fiorella (6 yrs) & Reynaldo (5 yrs): Suffering from motor coordination and spatial orientation, Fiorella is still unable to speak and has difficulties with motor coordination. However, being determined, focused, full of charisma and character, she is doing all within her power to develop her education and improve her rehabilitation. Her younger brother, Reynaldo, while not classed as being handicapped, has a limited attention span and is easily distracted at school, thus impeding his learning. Despite his attention disorder, he loves to express his emotions and needs people around him to help build his confidence, especially when he is playing outdoor games and participating in arts and crafts.

Gianmarco (9 yrs): Living with a single mother who left her husband due to domestic violence and who is suspected to be mentally handicapped, the family survives on the bare minimum wage Gianmaro’s mother earns as a cook in a local restaurant. Gianmarco suffers from severe autism and doesn’t speak, but has a kind heart and a keen interest in painting as well as writing. The support he will receive will go towards improving his quality of life and facilitating his integration into society.

While Enigma is actively contributing to the Sol y Luna Intercultural School by annually sponsoring five of the sixteen children with disabilities the project covers, there is still much more that needs to be done. The project needs help and regular funding to be able to maintain the high quality of transportation, food service, rehabilitation service, education and specialized care that each child has a right to receive.
