Peru\u2019s booming economic development over the past decade has shaped the country\u2019s landscape and defined a prominent future whilst molding its unique identity. The evolution of Lima\u2019s cultural modernization, undoubtedly helped propel the contemporary art movement storming the capital city, and quickly gaining recognition and rippling across the international art market. Lima witnessed a surge in popularity and ripening interest in contemporary art, with many institutions seizing the opportunities, elevating the city\u2019s presence in the global art world. Now home to a several major contemporary art galleries, international artists have flocked from different corners of the world to showcase their latest works of art in the coastal capital city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima Centre<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. The Lima Art Museum \u2013 MALI<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The MALI Museum is without a doubt one of the cultural powerhouses in Lima boasting over 3000 years of Peruvian art with the most extensive collection from Pre-Colombian times until present. The space houses a vast selection of textiles, ceramics, photographs and furniture from colonial and republican times preserving academic knowledge, where tourists can delve into the cultural development of Peru and unravel many fascinating historical facets. 2. Municipal Art Gallery Ignacio Merino<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Pinacoteca Municipal Ignacio Merino displays one of the most significant and varied Peruvian art collections of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Gaining great reputation internationally and on home soil, there are at present some 883 works with the most notable collections by watercolor painter Pancho Fierro`s who showcases an impressive 254 pieces. Ignacio Merino\u2019s collection comes from his burning passion to leave his legacy and work to the city of Lima, while putting a special emphasis on preserving local identity, heritage and educational development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. MAC Museum<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Lima Contemporary Art Museum in the bohemian district of Barranco opened in 2013, and boasts an impressive collection of international and national contemporary art dating from 1950 onwards. Promoted by the Institute of Contemporary Art, MAC Lima puts the leading manifestations of national and international art within the reach of the community through its collection, temporary exhibitions and a variety of educational and cultural programs. The collection includes pieces by South American and European artists and includes optical art, abstract expressionism, conceptual and geometric art, as well surrealism and pop art. Ideal for families, the establishment has a beautiful caf\u00e9 and garden, where artistic and cultural activities are promoted throughout the summer months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. MATE<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A true Peruvian icon, Mario Testino\u2019s MATE gallery is the only location in the world that has a permanent exhibition of the photography legends\u2019 work. Inaugurated in 2012, Testino restored an old colonial mansion that now serves as a non-profit institution with the goal of contributing to the development and promotion of heritage and culture in Peru. The gallery also aims to bring Peruvian artists and culture to worldwide attention, while showcasing the best of international contemporary art and photography. MATE facilitates this lively exchange through a dynamic program of exhibitions and events, with a permanent display of work by Mario Testino. The gallery has a cute little caf\u00e9, where you can relax after passing through the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Museo Pedro de Osma<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just around the corner from MATE in the traditional district of Barranco lies the Museum Pedro de Osma. Housed in an exquisite mansion surrounded by well-manicured gardens you will discover one of the most exquisite painting collections in Peru, some of which date back to the 15th century. The works of many well-known artists are displayed in different materials including wood, metal, glass, linen cloth and leather. Among the antique pieces of furniture, sculptures and textiles is a particular gem that stands out, that depicts a Corpus Christi procession in turn-of-the-17th-century Cuzco on a 2 meter-wide canvas. Showcasing the rich cultural and religious history of Peru, the museum is ideal for art-history enthusiasts and for those wanting to gain insight into Peru\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Lucia de la Puente<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The gallery is set in magnificent two-story casona in the heart of Barranco and is one of Lima\u2019s most principal and most prestigious contemporary art galleries. Founded in 1995, Lucia de la Puente Gallery has been promoting Peruvian artists for over 20 years, managing the work of up and coming artists, nurturing talents and helping promote the visual arts to reach an ever-growing audience. Some of Peru\u2019s top modern artists exhibit here and if staying at the adjacent arts-boutique Hotel B, exclusive private tours of the gallery can be arranged, where works by cutting-edge painters such as Fernando Guti\u00e9rrez, Ramiro Llona and Mariella Agois can be observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Callao<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Casa Cor & Proyecto Fugaz<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

El Callao is the chief sea port of Peru and although widely considered to be something of a coastal suburb of Lima (due to its proximity to the capital city), Callao has always been an independent constitutional province. Callao has struggled with street crime and poverty for years. This however has been slowly changing with the help of Casa Cor who has 20 years\u2019 experience in selecting run down and seemingly forgotten buildings that they revive and restore. In partnership with a privately funded initiative, called Proyecto Fugaz the area is undergoing radical changes to improve the quality of life for the residents of a thriving local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proyecto Fugaz, together with the urban art project Callao Monumental, consists of an army of up and coming national entrepreneurs and artists. Once Casa Cor had finished their work by restoring and refurbishing \u201cLa Casa Ronald\u201d, the space was ready to be utilized and turned into a hub of art galleries, design shops and restaurants. Showcasing their work are internationally acclaimed and local artists such as graffiti artists Entes y Pesimo, Evoluci\u00f3n (Cuban art), Bufeo (Amazonian art), and Micromuseo (contemporary art) that are all situated within arm\u2019s reach of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
