Inca builders met every obstacle with remarkable skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They laid stone stairways up steep mountainsides and paved the path for firm footing. Where valleys interrupted the route, they built bridges of stone or wood. He hoped to prove it was the legendary lost city of the Incas. Between 1913 and 1915, his team cleared sections of the overgrown path. The climb to Abra Warmihua\u00f1usca, known as Dead Woman&#8217;s Pass, reaches about 4,200 meters. Along the way, hikers may spot llamas, cloud-forest birds and, with rare luck, a spectacled bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protecting the trail is now a priority. Permits are capped at 500 people per day, including guides and porters. They are released on a first-come basis and can sell out months in advance. The trail also closes every February for maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plastic water bottles are no longer permitted on the route.
