It is a religious holiday on the Inca calendar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to legend, the first Inca, Pachatutec, create the festival to mark the first day of the New Year, which also coincides with the winter solstice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, this festival involved many animals sacrifices, mostly llamas, to convince Inti to return and give life to the land. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When is <strong>Inti Raymi<\/strong> Festival?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5ce82f7161ca8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1134\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Inti Raymi Festival is held every year on June 24th. Though the winter solstice is on June 21st, the Incas say that the sun stays in the same place until the 24th when it finally rises. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where is <strong>Inti Raymi<\/strong> Festival<\/strong> Taking Place<strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5ce82fc48f45e.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Festival of the Sun is held every year in Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/peru-traditions-holidays-festivals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peru Traditions, Holidays &amp; Festivals: The Annual Calendar Travelers Should Know<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The History of Inti Raymi<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5ce8320f68562.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1140\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Incas were at their most active, approximately 25,000 people would come to celebrate the Inti Raymi in Cusco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Festivities took place from dawn to dusk and included the sacrifice of 200 llamas, special dances, and the burning of coca leaves to mark the most festive day on the Inca calendar and the festivities traditionally lasted for nine days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Spanish conquered Peru, they banned the festival during the first few years, citing it as a pagan celebration that went against the Catholic religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though it was difficult to control in smaller areas, this festival then began to merge with the feast day of St. John the Baptist. This lasted from 1536 until its revival in 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5ce8304404d1b.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1137\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the Inti Raymi is a very special festival for the Peruvian people to celebrate tradition as well as the winter solstice. Dances, reenactments, processions, and spiritual worship are just a few ways that the Peruvian people celebrate this festival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This celebration also draws a lot of tourists to the Cusco region around this time and is the second largest festival in South America, after Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/inti-raymi-festival-of-the-incas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inti Raymi, The Festival of the Incas<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Celebrations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enigmaperu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/5ce831a4ae5dc.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1139\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning at 8 a.m. on June 24, the celebrations start in the large open field at the Temple of the Sun (Korikancha).  First, the Sapa Inca (the nobles and the army of the Inca) praise the sun god in Quechua and thank him for his gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antisuyu, Chinchaysuyu, Contisuyu, and Coyasuyu lead the way to Plaza de Armas, where the sacred coca leaf is read to find out what will happen with the empire in the coming year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then everyone makes their way to the ancient ruin of Saqsayhuman, a 5-kilometer procession, where the Sapa Inca gives his final words of the ceremony and concludes with the sacrifice of a llama to thank Inti for his generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Music, horns, panpipes, and drums fill the air with celebration as the ceremony comes to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The time of the Inti Raymi is truly an incredible time to visit the Cusco region.
