Ausangate
Ausangate stands out as a huge and very distinct snow-capped peak that can be clearly seen to the south from Cusco on most days. It reigns at 6,372 masl (20,900ft) and is the highest peak in the Cusco region. The Incas considered it a Sacred Mountain or “Apu,” and it is still revered as such not only by local shamans and healers, but also by a big majority of the local population who have kept traditions and beliefs from their ancestors and believe in the power of the Mountain Spirits.
The area of Ausangate hosts some of the most breath-taking scenery in the region. South of Cusco and in opposite direction to Machupicchu, the area is inhabited by scattered communities in truly small villages with difficult road access, mostly dedicated to raising cattle.
Our favorite treks run at an average of 4,500 masl (14,760 ft), and their landscapes are dramatic and phenomenal: snow-capped peaks, absolute silence, fresh and pristine thin air, strong high-altitude sun, lagoons of different colors ranging from black to turquoise, dry moraines, glaciers nourishing vast lakes, hot springs, condors if lucky, wild vicuñas, and otherwise llamas and alpacas raised by locals, identified with colorful threads hanging from their ears.
A truly unforgettable experience recommended for lovers of mountain trekking searching for an intense experience in remote areas and wild nature, allowing for a genuine immersion beneath the skin of the real Peruvian Andes.
(*) These treks do not end in Machupicchu. If interested in visiting the Inca citadel, please make sure to allow for additional days.
