Custom Journeys

The level of detail and follow through by everyone involved in our adventure (down to the driver of the van, Pablo who we were with for 5 days) was exceptional. We were always picked up on time, had someone waiting for us where and when they said they would be there, spoke good English, and were exceptionally helpful. They really acted like they enjoyed what they were doing vs it just being a job. This sounds like basic 101 and something all agencies should provide, but if any of this did not work perfectly, it would have created additional stress on my wife and I (and since a private tour, with no one to commiserate with). So kudos to Enigma on an exceptional organization.

Our guide for the longest time period we were in Peru, Nilo, was beyond exceptional. We could only hope that a future trip, we could have someone as good as Nilo.

What made him great?
To think about having a walking stick available for my wife over uneven surfaces.

To make sure our hands were sanitized each time we returned to the van.

Understanding our speed (we move a little slower with my wife’s knees having been replaced several years ago) and interest in what he was talking about and his pace of moving us around. He could tell when we were getting tired and didn’t feel like he had to rush us.

His never forgetting anything we asked for or about. Example: We had a challenge at our hotel, with communicating with the front desk in picking us up in a golf cart since we were a significant distance from the main area and restaurant. When I called, the person did not know what I was talking about, to be “picked up at our Casita” despite them offering it. It was a communication issue. Nilo jumped on it and made it right (and this was related to the hotel stay, not what was under his control).

Further, despite that Nilo would travel home every night (1-2 hours each way) after finishing with us, we never felt that he was rushing us, despite our moving a little slower, or the flight delays, etc.

The van we were in (and all of the transportation) was top notch. Roomy and relaxing. Not jammed into the back seat of a sedan.

The hotels we stayed at were all top notch, and we received upgrades in all of them. I wouldn’t change any of them.

The scenery, history and awesomeness in all of it (especially Machu Picchu) was a dream come true. And the service was top notch all around. We knew that we were paying a large amount for this trip; and we really felt like we got what we paid for. A fully escorted, all-encompassing trip and that we didn’t have to do much thinking about any of the logistics.

Well we are just sitting at the airport waiting to leave to fly to Chile and I wanted to quickly say thank you SO SO MUCH for organising such a wonderful tour for us!

It was simply one of the best experiences of our lives and your suggestions and organising were perfect.

I have to say Nilo our tour guide was absolutely the best person we could have had – hid beneath his charm and fun character is an amazing knowledge and passion for Peru and it’s people which was truly captivating – we cannot wait to return…!

It is hard to express just how perfect our trip was. I don’t know if I’ll be able to travel any other way now! Everything you recommended and put together for our itinerary was ideal. Our highlights were the train ride, cooking and pisco class, the Sacred Valley and our wonderful driver and guide, and every restaurant you personally recommended.

This trip would not have been possible without you! My dad had always dreamed of going to Machu Picchu, and while he wasn’t with us physically, we know he was with us in spirit. Thank you for facilitating a trip of a lifetime!

I wanted to Express my thanks to Enigma, our guide Julio and our driver Juan Pablo. They were both fantastic! We had an amazing time in Peru! Everything was exceptional. We enjoyed our visit with a local family, the beautiful countryside, Machu Picchu, our meeting with the shaman, and our tour of Cusco! We were so lucky to see and enjoy the festival of Corpus Christi!

As you may know, my husband was having some health issues while we were there. We thought it was altitude sickness but it turns out that he had pneumonia. He’s much better now. I’d like to extend my sincerest thanks to Julio and Juan Pablo for their help and compassion for him.

We had a wonderful time in Peru! We thoroughly enjoyed all of our tours, hikes, hotels and restaurants. Our travel guides and support group were wonderful everywhere we went! The food in Peru is wonderful and we enjoyed all of the restaurants. We particularly enjoyed Edgar in Machu Picchu and Cusco. All of the sites…… Ollantaytambo fortress, Maras & Moray and sacred valley biking ,the markets and all hiking were wonderful. The picnic lunch was unique and an amazing setting. The food at the picnic was one of my favorite meals! We loved our walking tour in Cusco with Edgar and our lunch and museum tour with Mirtha in Lima. The Peru environment is beautiful and full of rich history and culture.

As we all sit in the airport in Lima, we are looking forward to getting home, but will really miss the countries we have visited – especially Peru! The total trip has been an exceptional experience for all of us and we would like to thank both of you and your extended team for making it happen. The accommodations, guided tours and the guides that you chose were terrific. The consistency of the people that we met, either as your direct employees or contracted employees, were all very knowledgeable and provided a consistent high quality of service.

Classic Inca Trail

I thoroughly loved this trek! I learned so much more than I even knew existed out here. Freddy did a great job of taking time to explain the history + all the sites. Also, the trek was very well organized and it was great that we did more trekking in the beginning. Finally, the porters + the chef were amazing! It was the best food + service I received on this entire trip. I would defenatly recommend this trek to everyone!

Story time and the insight the guide gave us as week as how secluded the frst two days were at camp. This was excellent, I woul not change anything, I fell your service is vastly superior to other guide services. The small size of the group, attention to detail in regards to camp sites and overall experience was second to none! I feel that this service adheres to the integrity for the trail and Inca traditions. Thank you for one of the best trips we have ever done.

Hola Geraldine: We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Peru and are very grateful for all your help and assistance in making our trip a memorable one. We loved our Inca trail hike with Enigma since we had two great guides (Pablo and Fabrizio), wonderful porters, and spectacular views! Your organization of our trip was also wonderful since we had no problems with any of the hotels or flights. We will certainly recommend Engima to any of our friends who are interested in traveling to Peru!! Gracias por todo! La Familia de Wong 🙂

The hike was very enjoyable; the guide was knowledgeable and made the whole experience more interesting. The food was tasty, and seemed to be suitable for all the members of the group. The tents were nice, and water proof as well as always being in an excellent location. The family feel of the group made this trip especially enjoyable. Although the first 2 days of hiking were challenging, it made reaching the destination rewarding. No improvements to be made to the trip, however, I would suggest that Pablo stops scaring the female members of the group at night!

You have earned al life long costumer. Both Lea and I had all expectations exceeded. I have a difficult time believing this was not a luxury trek, with the quality of the food, porters, logistics, and of course, a master guide. Despite the number of hikers on the trail, both our party of six and our daily treks felt private. As world travelers and avid hikers, we will definitely return and Enigma will certainly be used.

July 2010

July of 2010 will remain in our memory as the most engaging and panoramic yet formidable trip of our lives to date. We are 60 and 68 years of age in good physical condition however the care and professional attention afforded us by Pablo, our guide, and the Enigma porters and cook, allowed us to enjoy our own levels of agony and ecstasy on this fantastic journey. We spent 3 nights on the trail and the fourth at the Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu. On day two, when we were not feeling well and struggling with the altitude, Pablo was extremely solicitous. His advice was invaluable (such as longer lunch rest and buying Gatorade along the trail) and his willingness to accommodate both our preference for pace of the trek as well as our love of photography made this experience the opportunity of a lifetime! I simply cannot find enough adjectives to explain our respect and admiration for the team that accompanied us on our trek. The porters were amazing and friendly – at one point even cheering for us as we summited our third and final pass of the trek. Our cook provided nutritious and tasty meals with the ease of performing a magic trick! And Pablo enthusiastically shared his love of the Andes and the Andean people. He willingly responded to our request to learn a bit of the Quechua language, adding in Spanish lessons as necessary and teaching us the history of the trail as we trekked. His knowledge of the flora and fauna was icing on the cake! Selections from our hundreds of photos taken on the Inka Trail will hang on our walls forever, however our hearts and minds need no reminders. We shall never forget this wonderfully excruciating experience and sense of personal achievement as we surveyed Machu Picchu from Intipunku. Thank you all for your vision to provide this opportunity to share your magnificent part of the world and for your extremely professional approach to every aspect of the adventure.

July 2010

Dear Enigma, Geraldine and others in the office, Three friends of mine and I just returned to the US from a once in a lifetime experience hiking the Inca Trail with our guide, his assistant, 22 porters, and 10 other hikers. Given that once in a lifetime experiences are just that, I remain amazed and overwhelmed with how incredible this experience was for me. It will take me a while to find the vocabulary to express myself well enough to be understood. Possibly I will not be able to describe it well enough to be understood, but the experience will be with me forever. Our guide’s many skills made all the difference in how our group came together. His technical skills were excellent. We always hiked together as a group, which helped us feel safe; his knowledge of everything we saw was incredible; and the fact that he explained EVERYTHING to all of us in his second language was humbling. Alberto’s interpersonal skills were most impressive to me, given the many different personalities, questions, needs, levels of exhaustion, concerns, etc. I have never experienced anyone who held the level of gracious integrity and respect for others under such extreme circumstances and for such a long period of time. After the long hike, our guide still had to cope with the road strike and getting us all back to our hotels safely, with everyone, including him, I imagine, feeling exhausted and some being quite angry. In my experience, Alberto kept our group together on the trail as well as emotionally. And, even though you randomly put the 14 of us hikers together, I feel so fortunate to have been placed with these particular hikers, each of whom contributed a great deal to my having a lot of fun while physically doing THE most difficult thing I have EVER done in my life. Also, his assistant was a wonderful, supportive and caring guide. From the rear of the group, he paid very close attention to how each of us was doing, noticed if we left our walking stick, or anything else behind, carried packs when needed, helped Alberto tend to injuries, the porters serve the meals and had a ready smile. Our guide and assistant both seemed tireless and attentive to our needs, those of the porters, not to mention keeping us on track with the hike. The porters were also amazing. Seeing them at the end of the day’s hike waving an Enigma flag and clapping for us is one memory, among so many, that will never be forgotten. Knowing that my life really depended on them, I was very humbled by their intensely strenuous work. THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THIS SUCH A GREAT ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT FOR ME

Perhaps more table room for the meals. NOT A COMPLAINT! It’s just that the food was so plentiful there was little room for the plates! EXCELENT FOOD!!! The guide was amazing, answered all questions. Everything was better than expected. I had food poisoning from a day before the trek and still managed to complete the first day. I loved the itinerary, how we avoided all the crowds, we always felt like we were the only group to be walking the trail. I also liked how the hardest day was the first, and then each day got easier. Dear Geraldine, This is Elizabeth Armstrong who trekked with Alberto from June 5 to 8. I filled out the feedback form, but I also wanted to let you know that Alberto is the best guide I have ever encountered. As I am sure you know, he is outstanding in his own right as a human being, but he is also extremely good at building team spirit in the group, guiding us compassionately and competently, informing us on all subjects from astronomy to medicine, and he has a natural skill for handling people and situations well. As far as I am concerned, my positive experience with the trek can be attributed to Alberto’s presence. Please take care of him well. He certainly took care of us well. Giorgio (Gorge) was also wonderful. Though he needs more confidence in his English skills, he is a kind and attentive person who was the perfect complement to Alberto’s strong leadership. We all loved Gorge and bonded with him despite our language differences. Thank you for a terrific tour.

Geraldine, in the office, was competent and helpful and patient via email. Our porters were kind, gracious. I had heard this was the experience of a lifetime. Enigma was worth the added expense and it was largely Geraldine’s prompt, informed email replies that booked me. I had also heard that the guide can make a break the trip- Luciano far exceeded my expectations in his general attitude, knowledge and clear pride in his country, job and Cusco.

It is honestly unimaginable to have done the Inca Trail with a better guide service. Not only was our guide extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable but also Enigma was to secure only the best campsite along the trail. In addition to the beauty of the trail, with every meal we were rewarded with and will easily describe as the absolute best food I’ve had in my entire two month Vacation in Peru. My biggest thanks go to all Enigma for making this experience a very special one indeed. Muchas gracias, muchas gracias! Live like the Incas, Travel like a King and go with Enigma!

It was my first experience hiking or trekking a major trail. I don’t think I prepared myself for it appropriately but I made it with the help of our guide and family. Unfortunately, I don’t have any suggestions as the whole experience exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. Pablo was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the sites we visited and took great caution to keep the pace at a reasonable level for everyone. The choice or campsites was also great because it allowed for a lot of privacy and spectacular vistas. The food was extremely delicious and in my opinion the best I’ve eaten during my whole visit in Peru! , The porters were very professional and had great timing along the whole trail.

We were a group from Langdale Holidays in the UK guided by Alberto and Julio. At Winay Wayna one of our group fell and had an epileptic fit. Alberto sent Julio on to the nearby cafe / campsite to get porters whilst he dealt very professionally with the casualty and the remainder of the group. At all times he was calm and reassuring. When the porters arrived Alberto went with them and the casualty while Julio led the rest of the group to continue the trek (the casualty was eventually OK and rejoined our activities us in Cusco.) All of the time Alberto was with us, (the next day too) he impressed us with his professionalism (particularly his pacing of the walk to the ability of the participants) and his knowledge of the Incas and their trails, and of the flora and fauna. We have been on many guided events all over the world and he is amongst the best. (I was a qualified UK Joint Services (Army, Navy, Air Force) Mountain Leader, so I know a good one when I see one!) Julio, too, impressed. When he took over we thought that he would just take us on to Machu Picchu, but he stopped many times to tell us of the local flowers and birds, and not only did his knowledge appear good, but his enthusiasm for his environment was very evident. We shall recommend Enigma to our friends, and when we return to Peru we shall use you directly. Please pass on our congratulations and best wishes to Alberto and Julio. Thanks!.

Enigma seemed to be friendly, trustworthy and honest.

GRACIAS!

It was a fantastic trek – difficult at times but well worth it. The service on the trek was wonderful – knowledgeable, supportive and fun.
The morning tea at weak up was unexpected but delightful, the food was always tasty, it was even too much for us, the guide was friendly, knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor, we really liked the additional time to hand out at the river on day 3. Thanks for everything.

We did not go on the booked trip (Lares Valley) due to illness.
We did day trip from Yanahuara village instead (Salinas, Moray, Chincheros, Markets in Urubamba + Yanahuara) and only some trekking for 03 hours.
Briefing was excellent, staff made all efforts to organized the new program for us instead of the pre-booked trek.

All excellent. Not much to improve. Excellent guide and food and porters. lomo saltado was excellent. Very nice to stick to no pork no fish. We asked for some dietary requirements that were met. Very knowledgeable about the area trees, plants, villages. Excellent service. Little cold first night, but that is nature. Very friendly everyone. Guide did extra things, like taking us to a house in Ollantaytambo!

My family and I were delighted with this trek. Edgar was a wonderful guide and played a big role in making the trek such a big success. I would like to note that we changed the itinerary of our trip at the very end to omit one day of trekking and spend two nights is Aguas Calientes because my daughter developed foot problems. I really appreciate Edgar’s flexibility in helping us to modify the trek to cope with Claire’s foot problem. Edgar was a terrific guide and my family and I thought this was a wonderful trek

Hernan is a special young man with both leadership and communication skills beyond his years. He made us feel welcome from the start. All the porters were friendly and courteous to myself and my family we even played soccer on Monday morning on top of Huchuyqosqo!! We asked Hernan if we could climb Waynapicchu and he did not think twice about accommodating us. It was a wonderful trip/experience and it was mainly because of Hernan I would recommend Hernan to my friends/Family.
Thank you Hernan!

Hernan made our trip perfect!!
Hernan spent the last five days as the guide for my husband and two sons. Each time they returned home from a trek they were full of all great stories. He took such good care of my family; he is an extra special person. We feel very blessed that he was our guide. He is like family to us now, we plan to keep in touch with Hernan, and we wish him the best in all he does in life.
Thank you Hernan!

I have been camping before, but I have never had such an amazing experience as this. From the beginning, when I didn’t even have to carry my back (thank you porters!) to the extravagant lunch tents and menus to sleeping among Inca ruins at Huchuyqosqo, every part of the trip was great. Hernan had knowledge of Inca history and the country of Peru that was so extensive that I never had a question unanswered. The whole group was very amiable and made it a very unique and personal experience, like the English-Spanish-Quechua lesson with Hernan and playing soccer with everyone at 1200ft on Huchuyqosqo, and of course the trip ended with a bay at Machupicchu and Waynapicchu. I don’t think I could have had more fun. Thank you.

The trip was unforgettable, I had the time of my life. Our guide Hernan was a perfect guide. He made the trip 100% better I think he is the best guide out all the other I saw on this trip. The porters were great too, they were very friendly and for in fact, we played soccer at Huchuyqosqo. Sixto, the chef, had excellent food. Marcelino was the nicest porter they were all great. We got to do many things. I enjoyed hiking form mile 104 to Machupicchu. Hernan was so great; he even decided to hike Huaynapicchu with us. In addition the porter on the hike on the Inca Trail, Hilario was great. My trip was awesome because of our awesome guide, porters and chef.
