Classic Inca Trail to Machupicchu
“We got back three weeks ago from Peru and I wanted to give a standing ovation to the folks at Enigma Peru and the four day, three night Machu Picchu Classic trek they organized for us.
Throughout our entire almost year-long scheduling process they have been excellent to work with. We began planning last Christmas and originally had a grand total of 19 people coming, three large family groups. Unfortunately, deaths in two of the three families meant that they had to cancel just a month before we were to leave. They had to forfeit their payment to the Peruvian government for their trail permits (which are non-transferable) but Enigma didn’t bat an eye and re-jiggered the plan for our family, the one remaining.
We were eight people, ranging from 16 to late 50s, and it was the physically most taxing thing the non-teenagers among us had ever done, and yet it was also entirely doable as long as — in the words of our fantastic guide Nilo — “you do it with a smile”.
I cannot begin to describe how amazing the trek itself was, like living in the pages of a National Geographic magazine. It was difficult to believe we were actually in this astounding landscape, high above the valleys and with clouds below us and ruins everywhere. In fact, Machu Picchu, while breathtaking, was the least remarkable thing on the trip to my mind. Being alone as a family in a ruin with only the mountains around us was much more moving.
It was the quality of the trek that Enigma created that made the experience so great. Given our age range, we weren’t up for the backpack-it-yourself model, but neither did we have the money for a “hot showers and massages” trip. Enigma was just right, with a lovely touch of luxury which (together with copious amounts of acetaminophen) made the four days so great.
There was the hot coffee and cocoa they brought to the tents in the morning at 5:00 (and even 4:00 am) when we had to get up and start on the trail. The amazing food prepared by our chef and his helper on two propane burners, a feat that astounded all of us. Three course meals at 13,000 feet! The porters who carried everything so that we could make it to the campsite by nightfall (and literally ran past us on steep trails to do so.) The hot water bottles that were handed to us as we left the dinner tent at night, making the sleeping bags (already quite warm) so inviting.
Then add on Nilo and his assistant guide Marco, and it was perfect. We asked questions constantly and they always took the time to answer them carefully. They stopped and showed us cool things we never would have noticed or even known about had they not been there. Those little asides, such as pulling a cochineal bug off a cactus leaf and crushing it to show us the red pigment the Incas used in their dyeing, or a really masterful and fascinating impromptu talk about Incan beliefs about the afterlife, gave a depth to what we were seeing that added immeasurably to the experience.
I highly recommend the company and Nilo in particular. I would say that it was a once in a lifetime trip, but frankly we were so impressed that we’ve talked about going back for a different trek to some more remote Inka sites.”

“The entire experience was that I hoped for: beautiful scenery, Peruvian culture, great food awesome guide, lifetime memories. It was all amazing. Wiñaywayna was my favorite Inca site because it was all to ourselves. Jaime´s family talks/ Peruvian and Inca culture/ history were captivating. I love his story telling style. Our talk at Dead Woman´s Pass where we reflected on our relationships was beautiful and I’ll remember it always.”

“The relationships/interactions with Ronald, Sixto, and the chaskis. We loved every single person who travelled with us. They felt like family. I can´t think of a single thing to improve. This trip was better than we ever could have imagined. We were smiling and laughing the entire time. Ronald is wonderful – he was patient, knowledgeable, kind and funny. He taught us a lot about history and culture, he even taught me Spanish! Every member of the team was incredible. Sixto went above and beyond every day – he is very talented. We can’t wait to come back.”

“I have no words to describe how magnificent this trip was from beginning to end. Lisbeth was wonderful communicating with me many, many times while we were scheduling and organizing the trip. She was so kind and patient with me and my many, many questions. Our guide, was incredibly kind, funny, patient, knowledgeable, supportive, attentive and caring. The food Sixto made for us was just incredible. It all fasted great. The quantity of food was huge. The display so much fun – quite artistic. All of our porters were so kind and attentive and responsive. We were very well taken care of. Mi family thoroughly enjoyed interacting with not just our guide, but Sixto and all thirteen of the porters. We felt like they were part of our family. We loved seeing them at the stops cheering our arrival and we loved cheering them on when they passed us on the trail. The logistics were perfect. There was never a time when our lunch sites or camping sites weren´t completely and perfectly set up. The views from our tents were gorgeous. The tents were comfortable and spacious. The trail was spectacular -it met all expectations. Our guide handled all of the transport perfectly – we never had to worry about anything. In fact, everyone did such a fantastic job taking care of us that we only had to worry about getting up the mountain. I do not have a favorite part of this trip because I cannot choose just one. This was the most magnificent trip of my 56 years and we were all very, very sad to see the end and have to say goodbye to our family.”

“The most enjoyable thing of our trek was the challenge, massages by Miriam. Help of Winder. Expertise of Erick, food by Theo. I wouldn’t change a thing! There was nothing we were left wanting, plus there were many unexpected and welcomed surprises. It was quite possibly the hardest challenge we have accomplished, and there was no way we could have done it without the help of your staff who made it all pleasure! Thank you!!!!”

From sun up to sun down he was all over everything to be sure we had what we needed & saw/learned about the treasures of this trip – Pancho’s food was FANTASTIC, we ate so well & loved the food. Our porters did an amazing job as well. They were so friendly & helpful. I would highly recommend this program, Erick, Pancho, porter’s group and Enigma to anyone considering a trek to Machupicchu.”

I thoroughly loved this trek! I learned so much more than I even knew existed out here. Freddy did a great job of taking time to explain the history + all the sites. Also, the trek was very well organized and it was great that we did more trekking in the beginning. Finally, the porters + the chef were amazing! It was the best food + service I received on this entire trip. I would defenatly recommend this trek to everyone!

Story time and the insight the guide gave us as week as how secluded the frst two days were at camp. This was excellent, I woul not change anything, I fell your service is vastly superior to other guide services. The small size of the group, attention to detail in regards to camp sites and overall experience was second to none! I feel that this service adheres to the integrity for the trail and Inca traditions. Thank you for one of the best trips we have ever done.

Hola Geraldine: We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Peru and are very grateful for all your help and assistance in making our trip a memorable one. We loved our Inca trail hike with Enigma since we had two great guides (Pablo and Fabrizio), wonderful porters, and spectacular views! The hike was very enjoyable; the guide was knowledgeable and made the whole experience more interesting. The food was tasty, and seemed to be suitable for all the members of the group. The tents were nice, and water proof, as well as always being in an excellent location. The family feel of the group made this trip especially enjoyable. Although the first 2 days of hiking were challenging, it made reaching the destination rewarding. No improvements to be made to the trip, however, I would suggest that Pablo stops scaring the female members of the group at night!

You have earned al life long costumer. Both Lea and I had all expectations exceeded. I have a difficult time believing this was not a luxury trek, with the quality of the food, porters, logistics, and of course, a master guide. Despite the number of hikers on the trail, both our party of six and our daily treks felt private. As world travelers and avid hikers, we will definitely return and Enigma will certainly be used.

July 2010
July of 2010 will remain in our memory as the most engaging and panoramic yet formidable trip of our lives to date. We are 60 and 68 years of age in good physical condition however the care and professional attention afforded us by Pablo, our guide, and the Enigma porters and cook, allowed us to enjoy our own levels of agony and ecstasy on this fantastic journey. We spent 3 nights on the trail and the fourth at the Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu. On day two, when we were not feeling well and struggling with the altitude, Pablo was extremely solicitous. His advice was invaluable (such as longer lunch rest and buying Gatorade along the trail) and his willingness to accommodate both our preference for pace of the trek as well as our love of photography made this experience the opportunity of a lifetime! I simply cannot find enough adjectives to explain our respect and admiration for the team that accompanied us on our trek. The porters were amazing and friendly – at one point even cheering for us as we summited our third and final pass of the trek. Our cook provided nutritious and tasty meals with the ease of performing a magic trick! And Pablo enthusiastically shared his love of the Andes and the Andean people. He willingly responded to our request to learn a bit of the Quechua language, adding in Spanish lessons as necessary and teaching us the history of the trail as we trekked. His knowledge of the flora and fauna was icing on the cake! Selections from our hundreds of photos taken on the Inka Trail will hang on our walls forever, however our hearts and minds need no reminders. We shall never forget this wonderfully excruciating experience and sense of personal achievement as we surveyed Machu Picchu from Intipunku. Thank you all for your vision to provide this opportunity to share your magnificent part of the world and for your extremely professional approach to every aspect of the adventure.

Dear Enigma, Geraldine and others in the office, Three friends of mine and I just returned to the US from a once in a lifetime experience hiking the Inca Trail with our guide, his assistant, 22 porters, and 10 other hikers. Given that once in a lifetime experiences are just that, I remain amazed and overwhelmed with how incredible this experience was for me. It will take me a while to find the vocabulary to express myself well enough to be understood. Possibly I will not be able to describe it well enough to be understood, but the experience will be with me forever. Our guide’s many skills made all the difference in how our group came together. His technical skills were excellent. We always hiked together as a group, which helped us feel safe; his knowledge of everything we saw was incredible; and the fact that he explained EVERYTHING to all of us in his second language was humbling. Alberto’s interpersonal skills were most impressive to me, given the many different personalities, questions, needs, levels of exhaustion, concerns, etc. I have never experienced anyone who held the level of gracious integrity and respect for others under such extreme circumstances and for such a long period of time. After the long hike, our guide still had to cope with the road strike and getting us all back to our hotels safely, with everyone, including him, I imagine, feeling exhausted and some being quite angry. In my experience, Alberto kept our group together on the trail as well as emotionally. And, even though you randomly put the 14 of us hikers together, I feel so fortunate to have been placed with these particular hikers, each of whom contributed a great deal to my having a lot of fun while physically doing THE most difficult thing I have EVER done in my life. Also, his assistant was a wonderful, supportive and caring guide. From the rear of the group, he paid very close attention to how each of us was doing, noticed if we left our walking stick, or anything else behind, carried packs when needed, helped Alberto tend to injuries, the porters serve the meals and had a ready smile. Our guide and assistant both seemed tireless and attentive to our needs, those of the porters, not to mention keeping us on track with the hike. The porters were also amazing. Seeing them at the end of the day’s hike waving an Enigma flag and clapping for us is one memory, among so many, that will never be forgotten. Knowing that my life really depended on them, I was very humbled by their intensely strenuous work. THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THIS SUCH A GREAT ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT FOR ME

Perhaps more table room for the meals. NOT A COMPLAINT! It’s just that the food was so plentiful there was little room for the plates! EXCELENT FOOD!!! The guide was amazing, answered all questions. Everything was better than expected. I had food poisoning from a day before the trek and still managed to complete the first day. I loved the itinerary, how we avoided all the crowds, we always felt like we were the only group to be walking the trail. I also liked how the hardest day was the first, and then each day got easier. She put us in contact with Alberto for a day tour that was also excellent. And you were wonderful in processing all of the logistics and getting back to us when we had questions. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Dear Geraldine, This is Elizabeth Armstrong who trekked with Alberto from June 5 to 8. I filled out the feedback form, but I also wanted to let you know that Alberto is the best guide I have ever encountered. As I am sure you know, he is outstanding in his own right as a human being, but he is also extremely good at building team spirit in the group, guiding us compassionately and competently, informing us on all subjects from astronomy to medicine, and he has a natural skill for handling people and situations well. As far as I am concerned, my positive experience with the trek can be attributed to Alberto’s presence. Please take care of him well. He certainly took care of us well. Giorgio (Gorge) was also wonderful. Though he needs more confidence in his English skills, he is a kind and attentive person who was the perfect complement to Alberto’s strong leadership. We all loved Gorge and bonded with him despite our language differences. Thank you for a terrific tour.

The enthusiasm of Pablo and the chef and porters really made the experience even more enjoyable than just the hiking in the Andes. I also enjoyed learning about the trail and different Inca complexes. We were able to go at our own pace taking pictures and were still able to feel as if we were the only people on the trail due to the program.

Geraldine, in the office, was competent and helpful and patient via email. Our porters were kind, gracious. I had heard this was the experience of a lifetime. Enigma was worth the added expense and it was largely Geraldine’s prompt, informed email replies that booked me. I had also heard that the guide can make a break the trip- Luciano far exceeded my expectations in his general attitude, knowledge and clear pride in his country, job and Cusco.

It is honestly unimaginable to have done the Inca Trail with a better guide service. Not only was our guide extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable but also Enigma was to secure only the best campsite along the trail. In addition to the beauty of the trail, with every meal we were rewarded with and will easily describe as the absolute best food I’ve had in my entire two month Vacation in Peru. My biggest thanks go to all Enigma for making this experience a very special one indeed. Muchas gracias, muchas gracias! Live like the Incas, Travel like a King and go with Enigma!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any suggestions as the whole experience exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. Pablo was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the sites we visited and took great caution to keep the pace at a reasonable level for everyone. The choice or campsites was also great because it allowed for a lot of privacy and spectacular vistas. The food was extremely delicious and in my opinion the best I’ve eaten during my whole visit in Peru! , The porters were very professional and had great timing along the whole trail.

I wanted to send an email thanking enigma for a wonderful experience while in Peru. My friend Karrin and I were on the 4 day/3 night Inca Trail hike from June 23-June 27 with Edgar and George as our guides. Edgar was the most wonderful guide imaginable, offering so much information and with the best attitude and outlook. His enthusiasm for the culture, scenery and our experience was contagious. I cannot imagine a better guide in the country. There were moments of the trek that were very difficult but I always felt comfortable, safe, and supported by our group and guides. After returning from our hike we wanted to take a tour of the Sacred Valley and contacted enigma for information. Kathleen offered to help us extensively and helped coordinate a private day tour that only added to our already great impression of enigma. She was wonderful to work with. We loved our trip to Peru and plan on coming back and working with Enigma!. Thank you again for everything!.

Without any doubt we felt Erick was the best guide we have ever had. He loves his job and it shows, He has amazing enthusiasm, and He made if exciting for us to learn. He treated the porters and cook wonderfully He actually called them OUR FAMILY we were fortunate to have a private tour and Erick allowed us to go at our own pace. We like to move fast at times but very slow on downhill and He has the patience of a Saint, We always had the very best possible site for our tent and the porters RAN to set everything up & RAN to get us a spoon etc. I appreciated the little touches, tablecloths, silver napkin holder, sugar, bowl, chef’s hat, etc The food was absolutely amazing!!! Everything about the trip was excellent. The food was delicious and very accommodating for vegetarians. The porters were wonderful, seeming as if they go out of their way to be helpful and friendly the trek was just enough of a challenge to make me feel accomplished when making it to the next camping site. Erick was gracious knowledgeable guide. He was very good at providing the enthusiasm for the group.

This was the most wonderful trip. A trip of a lifetime, I will treasure the memory. I have learnt a lot and will now read more about the Inca kings. I also felt that I had achieved a milestone in the trekking. It was the most difficult trek that I had done but I was encouraged by Belgar. It was a very calming experience. The food was excellent but too much and I felt bad leaving food considering it had been carried by the porters, The porters were very impressive.

The trek far exceeded my expectation. The attitude of all the staff was amazing. I was amazed by the skill and ability of the cook to prepare such delicious food with such minimal equipment. Carlos’ knowledge and flexibility ensure that we were able to do things at our own pace and be will informed on all sights and history. I was in awe of how hard the porters worked and how friendly they were. (Even though we couldn’t speak Quechua and our Spanish is minimal at best). They were excellent!

I really enjoyed going to Machupicchu and the sun gate on day three. The weather was amazing and the views and photos will stay with me forever. We arrived early to the site today and beat the crowds which was nice. All of the campsites were awesome and the food was great. Eric was very enthusiastic and encouraging throughout the entire trek. This has been a fantastic trip we have achieved a very long standing ambition. Nilton was an excellent guide who quickly understood how fast/slow we could travel, and see a very good pace accordingly taking account of how we would fare at altitude. He had lots of subtle ways of giving us breaks when he going was tough and was always encouraging and full of praise at the end of the day. He was very informative and really knew his flora and fauna, adding our overall enjoyment of the trip, his choices of campsites meant the both of us were able to complete the trail successfully. Above all he has been a great guy to go with!

I don’t think I could improve upon this outstanding trip. It exceeded my hopes and expectations and delivered even more. Everything has been slick, reliable, perfect and exceptional quality. Erick was a fantastic guide adding more to our trip than we could have hoped or advice, flexibility, friendship, knowledge and enthusiasm. The chef is a master, food better than any restaurant in Cusco. The porters are helpful, friendly and inspiring in all that they do. This was my first time in South America, first time in Peru, first time camping overnight. This was the most extraordinary experience I had an amazing time an awesome time. Marisol and Elvin made all of us comfortable and made sure we were happy and healthy the food was wonderful the mountains were beyond words, spectacular at least. Bathrooms awful but that were the only things I didn’t love. I hope to be back. Marisol’s knowledge of the history and power of the Incas and the Andean cultures along with her sense of humor specially made the trip. And it would be beneficial to point out how important that extra porter would be

Marisol is amazing the passion that she has for this program is clearly evident in the knowledge that she speaks. Both Marisol and Elvin were extremely personable and friendly and welcoming, same with the porters and cooks. The cook (Hilario) actually carried my backpack for the remaining hours and a half of the first day because it was clear that I was dying! My only recommendation is that first time hikers should be advised and encouraged to hire an extra porter. I had an extremely difficult time with my bag, but that is my only recommendation. Everything was absolutely terrific! Thank you!

I can not think of anyway the service could have been improved. The organization particularly on the trip itself was faultless- thanks Erick, Edith and the amazing porters we were the first group on the trail every day and felt as if we had the entire path to our selves. Erick’s enthusiasm and knowledge of his subject were outstanding and I was so impressed that after so many years of taking groups on the Inca trail he could still sound so fresh and genuinely impassioned. The story of Machu Picchu and the Incas was unfolded beautifully for us over the 4 days and he felt the great significance of it all as we finally arrived at the sun gate. Edith was also very caring and supportive to us all and both guides helped to foster a great group spirit and positive atmosphere, which made the trip a unique experience. Dear Enigma, My husband and I have recently returned from a 3 week holiday to Peru and Ecuador. Whilst in Peru we undertook the Inca Trail (classic) to Machu Picchu with your company. Our guide for the 4 days was Erick. We cannot praise him enough, his enthusiasm, his knowledge, his attention to trekkers and care for the environment was outstanding. He treated the entire group (porters and trekkers) like family and acted as a pivotal linkman between the two. He is a credit to your company and he “made” our holiday. I notice from your website that the guides do not appear in the photo gallery. I enclose two photos, which show Erick teaching us about the Incas and sharing the joy of walking in the Andes with us. I would be grateful if our comments and thanks could be passed on to Erick.

The trek was excellent- mainly to do with the guide. He made good and appropriate judgment calls in terms of our timing and campsites. We were originally suppose stay night 3 at a campsite we arrived at 8.30 am – ridiculed. Not to mention a long trek to get to Machu Picchu on day 4 & less time to appreciate the site. Edgar determined our best interests by staying at the further campsite of Winaya. We greatly appreciated this. Thanks!! All trek staff was fantastic, hardworking and very accommodating.

The porters should have a tent to rest in and sleep in so that they don’t have to wait until we’ve had dinner and gone to bed to rest in the dining tent. Overall, the trip was fantastic! Every aspect surpassed our expectations. The chef accommodated my allergy to wheat/gluten very well and always cooked separate food for me if necessary. We were all amazed that Pabel baked a birthday cake for Alan. Ernesto +Juan Carlos were the best guides I’ve ever had on a trip before. Ernesto is a fountain of knowledge about every thing! They both also have a fantastic sense of humor!

We have noting but pure and positive words to say about this trip! It was better than expected we were treated like royalty ? This trip (the whole 14 days to Peru) was a wedding gift from our friends and family. You (Enigma) were also a part of this gift. Very enjoyable trip, Erick was the best tour guide I’ve had. He was very knowledgeable, informative and looked out for our best interests. He also kept the information entertaining and was fun to hang out with. The food was excellent; we finished every plate served to us. We also received a standing ovation from the porters at the end of each hike. Every one was a lot friendlier and communicative than I could have asked for.

Although we’re a shy group, Erick allowed us to open up and be more comfortable. He deserves an A++++. Very smart man! Poncho’s food was excellent. The Inca Trail was marvelous, Miguel was an excellent guide, his knowledge and enthusiasm made the trip very special, we felt privileged to get to know a little bit about this lovely country, it’s people, it’s Inca heritage, the natural surroundings. This was an amazing experience made so much more amazing than I could have ever imagined by Eric and the rest of the staff. Eric was 100% excellent, informative, friendly, funny, supportive and all around great. From the beginning of the trip I felt especially fortunate to have such a Knowledgeable, fun and personable guide, and this feeling held true until the very last minute of the tour at Machupicchu. German the cook also made the trip very special, in Arequipa, Lima and Cuzco I never tasted excellent Peruvian cuisine I did in the wilderness on the Inca Trail! I think everybody did a fantastic job in providing us with a fantastic trip.
A special thanks to Hernan for being a great guide and also to the chefs and porters for such great food and service.
Machupicchu was just part of the this great experience and was soo much more rewarding to see after the trek!
The porters + chefs were very friendly and allowed us to take part in the cooking. This improved our experience and understanding of Peruvian people.
Our guide’s knowledge and language skills were far greater than expected; he was always helpful and supportive throughout the trek.
When eating, the porters + chefs could not do more to help and their service was excellent. The food exceeded our expectations and portions were more than enough.
I felt that everybody worked really well as a team and that the trek was more than just seeing Machupicchu, it was experiencing how Peruvian live, and their country. Pabel was absolutely fantastic. He is clearly a head chef. Not only does he know his stuff, but he prepares the food with great style. The soups were especially perfect after each day’s long hike.
The daily plan –where to camp and how far to hike was well thought out. The campsites were good and doing the longest days first was the right idea. I enjoyed Hernan and Edit on a personal level very much everyday. I mean this beyond whatever their duties as guides are. I learned a lot from both of them about local / indigenous ways – this means a great deal to me. They are both very warm. Hernan’s passion about his culture is very evident – this is much better than a guide who would just repeat information. There is not enough space here to say all I would like to say about this.

My wife + I have just finished one of the most amazing adventures of our lives. We are both over 55 years old + yet we blended in with a “familyof younger people, all European with ease + acceptance. We found the trekking a bit challenging but managed to get through with a smile on our faces.
The staff was unbelievable – the sight of the porters who had just fed us + broken down the campsite running past us, with huge sacks, is a sight I will not soon forget.
The guide was amazing in his depth of knowledge about Incan culture, Andean people and the trail itself. He was helful + caring and made the trip very enjoyable.
The food was fabulous, we loved the soups! The presentation was as good as any restaurant but done under the most adverse conditions.

I loved everything about ENIGMA. Our tour guide was absolutely amazing! He is very knowledgeable, patient, helpful and most importantly, kind + considerate. The porters went out of their way to make us feel right at home. They went above + beyond what I ever expected. It truly was an unforgettable experience and I’d definitely recommend this company without a doubt. Our cook was also magnificent – I felt truly welcomed in Peru and I leave with many wonderful memories.

Fantastic trip. The porters are incredible – carrying such huge loads so quickly & with minimal equipment.
An awesome country & an awesome experience. It helps to be fit & acclimatized to the altitides: would recommend at least 3 days to adjust to altitude before commencing the Inca Trail.

This trip exceeded all my expectations. It has been a life-long dream to visit Machu Picchu and thanks to our guide, Hernan, and his team of porters I was able to realize that dream in the most enjoyable way.
Hernan was knowledgeable, patient and friendly. The cook, Pancho, managed to create gourmet meals with the minimum of kitchen tools and is truly to be commended.
I have many friends in the UK and the US who are interested in visiting this area and I will highly recommend that they use ENIGMA and, if possible, request Hernan.

My favorite part of the trip was Erick. He was the best. He made the trip worth while. Also the food was excellent. Erick’s speeches were very informative and I was engaged in all of them. Also, he always had a surprise for us. I felt like I was really having an adventure. I also liked the other people on our trip and I am going to miss them. I thought all of the archaeological sites were awesome and the hiking was a very nice challenge for me.
I definitely thought that the trip was worth it and without your crew, I never would have made it through and if I did it would not have been as fun.
Eric was the greatest and so were the porters and cook.
I think that the way we got the good campsites and a nice tent for meals and hot tea or hot cocoa after a long day of hiking and a lovely meal in the morning for breakfast, lunch and dinner was the best.
Thank you.

I would like to commend the whole entire Enigma Team. Without the incredible porters carrying our equipment and belongings we would never have made the steep hills of the Andes, they certainly are amazing, and we are grateful to them. After a long day, coming back to the camp was a delightful joy. “Pancho, our cook always prepared with love the most wonderful dishes, not only were they presented with the most artistic style, but the quality of the food was equal to the one found in the best restaurants.
Finally, I would like to thank Hernan, he was instrumental in this trip. His enthusiasm, humor, always ready to help, his knowledge of this country and about the trail, made this trip unforgettable.
Thank you Hernan.

A+’s across the charts. Thought I would hate it , but it was amazing. The cook, José and the porters were really, really great. I’m not sure there’s anything you could improve. Maybe you could completely get rid of all the mosquitoes in Peru….but other than that – nothing. Thank you so much.
Also – José was such an amazing guide. Very friendly and extremely smart. He was “the bomb.

Erick is a fabulous guide – anticipated many needs as simple as stopping for a breath prior to beginning a steep climb, to asking porters to return to take our packs, meeting us on the trail so to ease our load. He is very efficient and a great planner – always staking out the best campsites. I was very impressed with his team approach – treating the porters and cook as his equals. Most important, he is a very tolerant guide – I was a very slow trekker – and he was always patient and very encouraging. Erick also has a great knowledge base of history, the archaeological sites, botany, the birds, animals. He is a wonderful young man with terrific leadership!!! He made our trek a very special adventure. Thanks!

This was a trip in a lifetime. The mystery of the Inca Trail @ times was dwarfed by your amazing staff. Starting with Marisol. She is a wonderfully brilliant strong young woman. She brought the Inca culture alive to us. Francisco´s cooking was masterfully brilliant. I couldn´t tell if I was in a Lima restaurant on a hiking excursion. The porters were unbelievable men. Sipriano, Alejandro, Lino, Manuel, Pascual. True example of professionalism. I will go back and tell all the Social Studies Teachers of San Diego, CA, about my trip of a lifetime, and let them know how wonderful of a company you have.
Marisol was an amazing guide! She always took the time to understand our needs and met them with more than we ever expected. She is incredibly knowledgeable about everything related with the Inca Trail – history of the trail, of the Quechua people, the archaeological sites and their discovery of theories, flora, fauna and more! She always took the time to share what she found out we were interested in. She also was very sensitive to my husband being sick and did everything possible to help him be comfortable and get better.
The cook was also amazing – the food was GOURMET! The porters were perfect!.

Use César more. He has excellent management and communication skills with both tourists and his team, and is very widely respected by other guides on the trail. His knowledge of the wider cultural and historical aspects of Inca culture enabled me to enjoy the whole of the trail, and especially Machupicchu so much more than I had expected.
The combination of César with Goyo, the chef, could not be faulted. I do hope that they are encouraged to train other guides and chefs who undertake the Inca Trail.

The people were amazing! Marisol, our guide, was lovely + adaptable + always thinking ahead. Her relationship with the chef and porters was fantastic + made our trip so enjoyable. Service was FIRST CLASS! Juan Bautista, the chef, had an amazing sense of humor + great attitude especially considering that it was pouring down rain + very, very cold for the majority of the trip. Juan directed his team of porters well + had very good communication with Marisol.
I was amazed at how well the porters worked under very difficult conditions – the weather + the amount of labor. We felt very lucky to be with our team of family for 3-4 amazing days.
We loved everything!!!

Hernán is an excellent guide with a great sense of humor. I really like the arrangement of the campsites and how the first day is the longest / most difficult. All the porters were friendly and encouraging. Hernán did a great job managing the group, especially since there were different paces of the group. This trip was amazing and the staff definitely contributed to my enjoyment.

We came on the trip with knee injuries and Hernán was always very encouraging and patient with us when we took our “time.
The idea of making the first day the hardest was great, so the second day didn’t seem so difficult.
The porters were very hard working and they got along well with each other – happy porters make great porters.
Hernán had many interesting things to say about all the Inca sites and his positive personality made the trail very enjoyable and an event to remember for a lifetime.

My first interaction with anyone from ENIGMA was when I called the day before I was scheduled to begin the hike nearly in tears because my backpack had gotten lost at the airport + I had no hiking gear. Andrea calmed me down, talked me through it + gave me the confidence to go out + buy some new supplies + go on the hike anyway. Later that night, I met Miguel + when he realized what had happened with my luggage, he went home + got me a windbreaker, a backpack and a flashlight to borrow. Without those supplies, the hike would have been uncomfortable, but thanks to Miguel´s thtoughtfulness (along woth his knowledge and sense of humor), I was able to thoroughly enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the Inca Trail.
I will recommend ENIGMA to everyone I know.

“Julio was excellent. He really made the trip the best he could for us – good camping sites – background to Inca life – brilliant!
The small group was really good for us, it meant we all stayed together – good group dynamics!
Advice: porters 2nd day really useful to increase enjoyment.
Thank you very much!

“We were very happy with the trip. Wilbert, our guide, is very knowledgeable about both anthropology and natural history. Beyond this, he has had an interesting life: musician, scholar, traveler, mechanic…we felt lucky to have him and he bonded with the group very well. Genaro, the cook, has a great future as a chef. The food was uniformly excellent and there was always more than we could eat… we didn’t even have to eat our extra snacks. The food was of the highest rating without doubt!!

“It was really nice to have such a small group and a very knowledgeable guide. The food was much more than I had expected and the service of the porters and the crew was very personal. I hope everyone has such a great experience on the Inca Trail!

“Most important factor that seemed to separate ENIGMA from others is group size. We only had 6 people and were very lucky. If I were to choose a company for the Inca Trail, I would pay more for small group size.
Great food!

“Keep your heart in the right place & never lose sight of the ambition to provide a quality service with integrity and enthusiasm.
For me, an “Atrip would have been one with more time, maybe longer on the entire trail.

“Knowledge, friendliness, quality of service and food. FUN! Porters and guide, became friends!
I have no suggestions for improvement.
The sincerity, knowledge and expertise of the porters, cook and Gary was extraordinary. They took such good care of us and I very much enjoyed getting to know them as friends.
I also valued Gary’s approach to explaining the culture and history from the spiritual beliefs of the Incas. It made the experience more rich.
I wish you prosperity + happiness in your business!
Thank you.

“Excellent trip. Well organized. Good planning. Gary has a great rapport with the porters and has an excellent work ethic. The guide can make or break a trip…he made it great. Overall though my wife and I had an excellent time, we had both been looking forward to this trip for a long time and were extremely pleased with the way Gary ran the trip. Thanks so much!!

“Thank you so much! It was the best trip I’ve ever been on. It was such an awesome challenge.
Gary – you were so positive and enthusiastic it kept us all going. I really loved the time you took with us to share the Inca culture – I think that was my favorite part.
The food was awesome and all the cooks, porters and staff were great and really attentive.
If I’m ever back in Peru – I’ll know where I’ll be!
Thanks again so much!!
